  • Summary/Abstract: Trade contacts between Rome and China in antiquity are indirect. The goods are transported over a huge distance from many trade contractors before reaching their final destination. There are two main routes along which goods move: north and south, but they have many branches, some of which have been studied, and others remain enigmatic for the time being. Trade and the accompanying outflow of financial resources in one direction or another often lead to political and military conflicts between the two empires and their neighbors. The emphasis in this case is on the problems related to trade contacts and the conflicts generated by them, which in turn in many cases create problems for the movement of goods over traditional trade routes and lead to the search for new routs that bypass conflict zones.
