  • Summary/Abstract: 'Bulgarian studies’ in China has a long history. Within BFSU, where it was established, it is also one of the most prestigious specialties at the Faculty of Small European Languages. In the last three years, however, the Bulgarian language (in various forms) has been taught and studied at other universities. An experiment was also conducted at a high school in Beijing (Bulgarian as a second European language). This paper attempts to outline the possible directions of development of Bulgarian studies and to discuss how they can increase the prestige and popularity of the Bulgarian language, culture and literature. The author seeks to suggest to the institutions in Bulgaria which are in charge of Bulgarian studies abroad, the appropriate solutions and the necessary measures, which are different from those in European countries.
