CUG 2025 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
Program Introduction
For the purpose of satisfying the growing demand of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitating Chinese language education all over the world, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) will continue with the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, aiming to cultivate qualified overseas Chinese teachers. Overseas Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese Language normal colleges or departments in foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction of other countries, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (collectively “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers to study in Chinese universities and colleges (“host institutions”).
China University of Geosciences (CUG), as one of the Host Institutions, welcomes applicants from all over the world to study at CUG.
Eligibility
1) Be non-Chinese citizens with valid passport;
2) Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations of China and the rules and regulations;
3) Be in good physical and mental health, be in good academic and behavioral standing;
4) Be interested in Chinese language education and related work;
5) Be aged between 16 and 35 years on September 1, 2025. The maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45.
Categories and qualifications
1) Scholarship for One-Year Study ProgramThe program commences in September 2025, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of eleven months. In principle, applicants who have received a similar scholarship within three years are not eligible for this program.
A. Applicants of international Chinese language education programs shall have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
B. Applicants of Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, or Chinese philosophy programs shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
C. Applicants of Chinese language study programs shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3), and priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.
2)Scholarship for One-Semester Study Program
The program commences either in September 2025 or March 2026, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of five months. In principle, applicants who have received a similar scholarship within three years are not eligible for this program.
A. Applicants of international Chinese language education program shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
B. Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, or Chinese philosophy programs shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
C. Applicants of Taiji culture program is required to provide HSK test score, and priority will be given to those who also provide an HSKK test score.
3) Scholarship for Four-Week Study Program
The program commences either in July or December 2025, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of four weeks.
Applicants of Chinese language study, Taiji culture, or Chinese language plus homestay with a Chinese family program are required to provide an HSK test score. The program may be organized and applied for by a Recommending Institution with 10-15 participants per group. Before the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made in consultation with our university.
The coverage of the Scholarship
The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodations fees, living allowance (excluding four-week study program students) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.
Application procedure
1) Log in the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (http://www.chinese.cn) from February 20, 2025. Applicants can choose China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) with the agency code 10491;
2) Log in the CUG International Student Online Application System (http://admission.cug.edu.cn/) to complete the registration and submit the application materials online;
3) Applicants should track the application process, review comments and results after completing online application;
4) Scholarship holders need to confirm with China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) to go through the procedures of studying in China;
5) Register at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) on the date written on the Admission Notice.
Application deadline (Beijing time)
1) For programs commencing in July, applicants must complete their applications by April 15.
2) For programs commencing in September, applicants must complete their applications by May 15.
3) For programs commencing in December, applicants must complete their applications by September 15.
4) For programs commencing in March 2026, applicants must complete their applications by October 31.
The results will be announced about three months before the program starts.
Application materials
1. Passport copy (the page with photo);
2. HSK certificate, HSKK certificate (valid for two years) copies;
3. Recommendation letter by the head of the Recommending Institution;
4.In-service Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment and a reference letter from the employer;
5. Applicants under 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China;
6. Medical certificate. Applicants should submit the Foreigner Physical Examination Form (Appendix 2) which should be filled in English. The original copy shall be kept by the applicant. Applicants shall have the examination in strict accordance with the items required in the Form. The Form is invalid with missing items, without affixing a photo stamped with a Paging seal, or without the signature and seal of the doctor and the hospital. Since the examination results are valid for 6 months, applicants are requested to determine the time of the examination accordingly;
7. Certificate of no criminal conviction. Applicants shall submit the certificate of no criminal record within the valid period issued by the local Public Security Organ, which usually should be within 6 months before the date of submitting the application.
Note：POLICIES REGARDING IN-SERVICE CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHERS AND CHINESE BRIDGE WINNERS
1) In-Service Chinese Language Teachers
In-service Chinese language teachers need to provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the employer.
2) Chinese Bridge Winners
Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions need to submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to the Host Institutions directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.
