- Summary/Abstract: Matteo Ricci or Limadou, as he was called in China, was a Jesuit of Italian descent who came to live in China during the Ming dynasty. He was one of the pioneers of the Catholic Church in China, and also the first Western scholar to read, study and translate Chinese literature and the Chinese classics. He made an important contribution to the exchange between the Chinese and the Western cultures. This paper reveals some of the reasons why his attempts to spread Christianity in China remained fruitless.
